Jack's Review of Star Trek
First, I can't stand JJ Abrams writing or directing. He is terrible. He can't tell an original story (more on that later), and he covers up bad direction with pointless camerawork and special effects, resulting in something that constitutes all flash with no substance. This reinvention of Trek should never have been handed to Abrams. He openly stated that he never watched or liked Trek as a kid. Why would someone that has no emotional attachment to a franchise be asked to breathe new life into said franchise? Money. That's the main reason. He had no real track record - just the worst Mission Impossible film and a TV series (Lost) that seemed interesting yet fizzled into fan fiction and lies by the end. He stole from E.T. and The Goonies to create Super Eight, he stole from Lord of the Rings, The Goonies, and Harry Potter to create the new Star Wars films, which were like watching a toddler play with Star Wars toys for a few hours by mashing them together. He can't tell an original story, folks. So, that brings us to his 2009 Star Trek entry. It has fun moments here and there, sure. But did we really need or deserve a retelling of characters that already had 79 live action episodes, 22 animated episodes, and 6 feature films? No. We should have been given a new ship and crew. Instead we were treated to a lens flare debacle - 721 lens flares - destroying two of the franchise's most beloved and storied planets along the way.
